ACM Awards — Winners & Wrap-up

May 19, 2008

Copy of CarrieNC2 The ACM Awards are over and done with for another year … and I wasn’t at all unhappy with the winners list this year. Carrie Underwood was named Top Female Vocalist. And I thought the tribute she and Brad Paisley did for Eddie Arnold was really well done.

Speaking of Brad Paisley, he was the winner of the Top Male Vocalist award this year. I might have picked Rodney Adkins for that one… except … what in the world was wrong with the microphones, or the speakers, or something at that awards show! Rodney was really off key last night, and he kept playing with is little earpiece as if he couldn’t get any sound of out of it. I don’t know if he couldn’t hear the music, or if he couldn’t hear himself, but it was terrible! And he knew it. He didn’t look like he was enjoying his performance at all.

I think Kellie Pickler was having a problem too, because when she came out to sing, she took her ear piece out almost as soon as she started.

I’ve heard Rodney sing with just two guitars and a drum before; I know the boy can sing. I’d love to know what was going on last night.

011_11 Other award winners included Jack Ingram for Top New Male Vocalist; Taylor Swift for Top New Female Vocalist; and Lady Antebellum for Top New Duo or Group. Brooks and Dunn won Top Vocal Duo, and the honors of Top Vocal Group went to Rascal Flatts. And the Entertainer of the Year was won by Kenny Chesney.

Copy of LA21 I really thought the show was good. They had so many performances scheduled, and a great group of presenters. But I would still like to know what was wrong with the sound system that was creating problems for the singers. Brooks and Dunn didn’t sound good, Rascal Flatts didn’t sound good… and since I’ve seen almost all of these entertainers live before, I know they can sing. But I really felt bad for Rodney. To be up there doing a portion of each of his four No. 1 songs, and to have it come out sounding like it did must have been awful for him. We still love you, Rodney!

Now it’s your turn. Let me know what you thought of the show … the winners… the performances…the night in general. Always love your comments!

An Assortment of Stuff…

May 18, 2008

With the 43rd Academy of Country Music Awards about to hit television screens all over America, (and no ACM Party to go to tonight) – I thought it was a very good time to put a little new information on this blog. Sorry I’ve been away so long – but this is a really busy time of year for me. I’ll try to do better — honest.

First, I suppose all of you have heard that Shania Twain and her husband, Mutt Lang, have separated after 14 years of marriage. They have one six year old son, and homes in New Zealand and Switzerland.

Rodney Jennifer 006 Rodney Adkins has certainly come a long way since this photo was taken at a local Wal-Mart. Rodney was on tour promoting his second CD when this was taken. And now, 4 No. 1’s later – Rodney is one of this year’s Breakthrough Artists. He’s also nominated for Top Male Vocalist and album of the year for Going Through Helll. For all of his fans in the Northeast Tennessee area, Rodney will be at Fun Fest this year. He will be on stage at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 17, at the Community Concert, presented by AGC Flatglass. Additional sponsors of the concert are 96.9 WXBQ and NewsChannel !!.

024_24 To all of you who have been enjoying the web site Buckymaina, I hate to have to tell you that the host of that site has announced that due to employment opportunities, she can no longer continue bringing us all those great photos and news about Bucky. Winnie, who I was fortunate enough to meet through this site, did say she will leave the information up as long as she is allowed. And also wanted everyone to know that you can still keep tabs on Bucky’s career by going to his site. Thanks, Winnie – for all the help and encouragement you’ve given to me with my first attempt at blogging!

GeorgeStrait2 Country Weekly magazine has a little piece this month about George Strait’s 1992 movie, Pure Country. Hard to believe it’s been that long! The movie is heading to Broadway – in the form of a play, of course. With songs like “Heartland” and ‘I Cross My Heart”, the original screenwriter Rex McGee, and veteran director Peter Masterson wrote the new musical’s spoken dialogue. I’ve never seen a Broadway play – maybe it’s time I think about it. George is nominated for Entertainer of the Year again tonight at the ACM awards.

I need to run and get a few things done before the awards show starts – grab your popcorn and your soft drink, and get ready! And when it’s over … you know what to do! Post a comment, or drop me a line, and let me know what you think. I just love hearing what you guys have to say about all of this!

More later!

CMT Video Award Winners

April 15, 2008

How many of you were more than a little disappointed with the CMT Video Awards program last night? I know I was. I don’t mean just because some of the people I voted for didn’t win – I mean the whole show in general. It just didn’t seem to be as interesting as in years pasts. And it really wasn’t as entertaining.

I don’t think Miley and Billy Ray were the right choice for hosts either. I know she is a teenager – but did she have to act like one? Sorry, Miley, I just didn’t think you did a great job.

TaylorSHere are the winners – Video of the Year – “Our Song”, Taylor Swift. I like Taylor. I just wouldn’t have given her that award. It wasn’t the best out of those nominated. She obviously has a lot of fans. Taylor also took Female Video of the Year.

Duo Video of the Year – Sugarland for “Stay”. I really like these guys, and I like most of their songs; “Stay” isn’t one of my favorites – but I’m glad they won.

JMC and Trace Adkins 211 Male video of the Year – Trace Adkins, “I Got My Game On”. Way to go Trace. I think he’s really been ignored by the ACM and CMA awards over the past several years – so was happy that the fans voted for him. I also thought it was nice that Trace thanked country radio. I believe he was the only one that did that. Rodney Carrington got the award for Supporting Character in a Video for this Trace video, too.

And the winner of the Wide Open Country Video (such an odd category, I think they invented that one for the winners) … Allison Krauss and Robert Plant, “Gone, Gone, Gone”. That one is just not my kind of country. But I’ve always liked Allison.

The Collaborative Video of the Year went to LeAnn Rimes, with Bon Jovi, for “Nothin’ Better to Do”.

00 PM ET/PT) on AMERICAN IDOL. Kellie Pickler ended up on top for “I Wonder” in  the Tearjerker Video of the Year, the CMA Performance of the Year, and the Breakthrough Video of the Year. Ok, ok, it wasn’t a bad song. But three awards? I was kind of hoping that Bucky Covington would get the Breakthrough Video award for “Different World”. It was good! And I voted… a lot! Sorry, Bucky, maybe  next year.

And the Comedy Video of the Year went to Brad Paisley. I don’t think anyone would say he wasn’t deserving of that award.

045_45 Rascal Flatts took home the award for Group Video of the Year for “Take Me There”. Did any of you think they really didn’t sing well last night, or was it just me?

And last, we had the Video Director of the Year – that award went to Michael Salomon, and his videos included Toby Keith’s High Maintenance Woman; Trace Adkins, I Got My Game On; and Toby Keith, Love Me If You Can.

Copy of 029_29 And here’s a picture of Bucky – just cause I think he should have won, and cause he’s cute. (I’m not sure who took this one, but it’s one of mine, one of Brittany’s or one of Winnie’s. Enjoy.) And remember, for all the best Bucky pictures and news, visit Buckymaina!

Am I being too critical, or does anyone out there agree with me? Who didn’t win that you would have liked to see win? Did you guys like Miley and Billy Ray in their hosting roles?

Always look forward to hearing form each of you. Have good Wednesday – and in spite of the past few days, “Think Spring.”

Tim McGraw … CMA Music Festival

March 25, 2008

TimMcgraw Not that long ago, I would not have believed anyone who said, “Tim McGraw will not be nominated for an ACM Award in 2008.” But, they would have been right. While Tim McGraw is still at the top of his game, having the ability to push out one hit after the next, and sell out concerts everywhere … somehow, he missed getting nominated for anything this year. But he certainly isn’t alone. (Thanks Brittany for the great photo of Tim taken in Rogersville, TN).

Also on this year’s list of “non-nominated” is Tim’s wife, Faith Hill. Faith has already announced that she will be a part of the CMA Festival in Nashville this June. Faith will be performing at the event for the first time in 10 years.  I’m sure fans will be looking forward to having her back.

010_10 Dwight Yoakam is scheduled to make his first appearance at the festival since 1988. Other entertainers scheduled to perform include Alan Jackson, Carrie Underwood, Josh Turner, Taylor Swift, Sugarland, Rodney Adkins… and many others.

For more information about CMA Festival, visit or call 800-CMA-FEST.

Talk to you guys tomorrow!

UPDATEI received a comment to this post, from Jackie, who wanted to know if she could get tickets to the ACM Awards show on May 18. The answer is yes. Tickets are available to the show, which will be held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. Ticket prices range from $195 each to $999 each. ( I just found out on Saturday, March 8, that the least expensive tickets are now sold out, and available tickets are starting above $300). One of the places they can be ordered is Find Tickets Fast.

Thanks again for you comments, e-mails, questions, photos, and everything that you are all doing to help me with this blog, and Thanks, too – for reading!

2008 Grammy Awards

February 11, 2008

We didn’t have any country winners in the “major categories” last night at the Grammy Awards – But I think all of our country entertainers are winners just the same!

Female Country Vocal Performance: “Before He Cheats,” Carrie Underwood.
Male Country Vocal Performance: “Stupid Boy,” Keith Urban.
Country Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals: “How Long,” Eagles.
Country Collaboration With Vocals: “Lost Highway,” Willie Nelson & Ray Price.
Country Instrumental Performance: “Throttleneck,” Brad Paisley.

Spring Tours & CMT Awards

February 8, 2008

Tim McGraw will kick off his 2008 tour this Spring – without Faith Hill. After two tours with Faith, Tim will go solo this year. Unfortunately for Tim’s fans, his ’08 Live Your Voice Tour won’t get any closer to our area than Charlotte, N.C. That concert, with opening acts, Jason Aldean and Halfway to Hazard, will take place May 16. Anyone planning to head to Charlotte for that big event  needs to get their tickets early.

Jack 100% Jack Ingram, who performed last year at our Appalachian Fair in Gray, has been nominated for two CMT awards this year. “Gunpowder and Lead”, from the CMT Cross Country with Miranda Lambert, got him the nomination for Performance of the Year. His “Measure of a Man” video has been nominated for Wide Open Country Video of the Year.

While on the subject of CMT awards, “High Maintenance Woman,” has been nominated for three awards – Male Video of the Year and Comedy Video of the Year for Toby Keith, and Video Director of the Year for Michel Salaman.

Happy Birthday to Travis Tritt, who will be 45 on Feb. 9.
